Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
Uterine fibroids are the most common type of tumor in the female reproductive system. These benign tumors can cause menstrual disorders and are associated with subfertility, miscarriage, and severe cramping/pressure effects. Uterine artery embolization is a minimally invasive, non-surgical, uterine-sparing alternative for treatment of uterine fibroids. This technique provides significantly faster recovery, with the resumption of usual activities occurring much quicker than convention surgical procedures.
Uterine embolization involves selective catheterization of uterine arteries and their blockage. In uterine fibroid embolization, the blood supply to the fibroids is blocked, causing them to shrink. After making a small skin incision in the groin, a catheter is steered into the arteries of the uterus and small sand-sized particles are injected into the fibroid vessels, causing their blockage.
Dr. Silberzweig has written extensively on the subject of uterine fibroid embolization. At Cosmetic and Vascular Suite NYC, we work closely with your gynecologist to bring together a team approach to managing symptomatic uterine fibroids.
