Laser Tattoo Removal Q & A

by James Silberzweig, MD

How do lasers work to remove tattoos?

Lasers are designed to emit precise levels or frequencies of energy which can be absorbed at varying levels depending on the color of the tissue or object that’s being targeted. In the case of laser tattoo removal, different pigments absorb laser energy, heating up and breaking apart into tiny particles that can be removed by the body over time. Cosmetic and Vascular Suite NYC uses the CUTERA Enlighten laser system, the first and only laser system to offer dual wavelength and dual pulse duration technology designed specifically to treat unwanted tattoos and other stubborn areas of discoloration in the skin.

What happens during a laser tattoo removal procedure?

Prior to laser treatment, the tattoo will be carefully assessed to “map out” the best treatment approach. Next, the skin will be cleansed and a topical anesthetic may be applied to the skin to reduce discomfort caused by the repeated firing of the laser during treatment. The handheld laser device is moved carefully over the treatment area, firing off pulses of laser energy to break apart the pigments so they can be removed over time by the body. Depending on the number and type of pigments used in the tattoo, the laser energy may be adjusted multiple times during treatment to achieve the best possible results.

How many treatments will I need?

Most tattoos require more than one session to obtain the best results. The number of treatments will depend on the type and color of the pigments that were used in the tattoo, the depth of the pigments, the patient’s objectives and other factors.

What should I expect following laser tattoo removal?

Immediately following treatment, a special ointment will be applied to protect and soothe the skin and to prevent infection. Care instructions will be provided to ensure the area heals properly, including instructions for bathing or showering. The skin in the treatment area may appear red or feel slightly sore, similar to having a sunburn. These results are temporary and will quickly resolve. Noticeable fading of the tattoo will begin while the area is healing.
